The site of the new Focus Film Theatre is of great historical importance. Kerkplein is the location of the prominent Eusebius Church, which is of particular significance for Arnhem as a symbol of post-war reconstruction. It was therefore essential to carefully integrate the new building into its context and embed it in its surroundings. The new film theatre responds to the surrounding urban structure and is designed to preserve sight lines from the approaching streets. It forms the link between the historical city centre, the post-war area and the River Rhine.
Before the war, buildings filled the space around the church, and the site of the new film theatre was occupied by a narrow alley called Torensteeg. This historical alley has been recreated as a structuring element in the new building, preserving views of Eusebius Church. Views of the tower also play an important role inside the building. The church is visible through the glass roof from the grand public staircase that leads to the cinemas. The facade of the film theatre consists of a double-height transparent plinth with richly detailed brickwork above, echoing some typical elements found in the centre of Arnhem, such as the brickwork patterns of post-war architecture.
All public functions are visible as soon as you enter the building. The ticket counter is located in the spacious entrance hall, which offers a view through to the grand café. Voids connect the entrance area with the foyer on the floor above, also visible from the square outside. The broad timber staircase at the centre of the building leads to all cinemas and to the roof terrace, where films can be screened outdoors.
